Fostering personal and artistic growth through the visual, performing and digital arts, the Center offers after-school, weekend and summer classes to more than 800 children and youth each year, 80% of whom come from low-income households. Bringing high-quality arts education to families who would otherwise not have these opportunities, Sitar Arts Center relies on charitable contributions to ensure that no family is ever turned away because of inability to pay. With each and every generous contribution, Sitar Arts Center is able to provide young people in our community with the opportunity to discover and develop their gifts and talents in a safe and nurturing place.

Fall 2011: WEAVE: Washington Empowered Against Violence

WEAVE engages the metropolitan Washington DC community in the elimination of intimate partner abuse and other forms of gender-based violence through empowering, innovative and holistic services. Their holistic services model combines legal representation, counseling and case management so that clients can concurrently address their legal, emotional, and practical needs. Employing this holistic program ensures services are readily accessible and coordinated between staff attorneys, pro bono attorneys, licensed clinical social workers, mental health professionals and client advocates. Through the holistic services model, WEAVE provides clients with the full range of tools necessary to achieve safety and self-sufficiency.

Spring 2011: E.L. Haynes Public Charter School

E.L. Haynes serves more than 725 students in grades Pre-K through 9, with 85% Advanced Placement courses and a 1:1 laptop program to provide students with the rigorous instruction and technology-infused programming that wil best prepare them for success in college and careers. The DSS Spring 2011 donation provided 50 laptops for E.L. Haynes students.

Fall 2010: GW Mammovan
DSS Donation to date: $25,500
George Washington’s Mobile Mammography program is the first and only such program in the DC area. Accredited by the American College of Radiology, the program provides state-of-the-art, digital mammography screenings to women in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. The program has screened nearly 19,000 people in the region since its inception and more than 71 women have been diagnosed with breast cancer on the Mammovan.

Spring 2010: CityDance Early Arts
DSS Donation to date: $20,200
CityDance Early Arts offers free dance classes and performances to children in more than 20 schools and community centers from DC’s most underserved neighborhoods. Since our inception in 1996, more than 30,000 students in the DC Metropolitan Area have had access to free field trips to see professional performances, in-school performances, dance and literacy after-school programs, summer camps, and dance scholarships.

Fall 2009: Rachael’s Women’s Center

Rachael’s Women’s Center is a daytime shelter for homeless women located in the downtown area of Washington, D.C. and is one of only two day shelters in the District exclusively for women. For the past 30 years, Rachael’s has provided thousands of women experiencing homelessness with the basics necessary for their survival and has served hundreds of thousands of meals to the homeless in Washington.

The DC Rape Crisis Center is the only organization in DC providing support services to survivors of sexual assault and education to all age groups about the issue of sexual violence. The Center has been serving the DC community for 36 years and reaches over 10,000 people every year.
